A dry, wool-like touch. But it’s cotton.

The UES “70RW-DU New Pukara Sweatshirt.”

This is an updated version of the Pukara Sweatshirt, which was produced through 2023, carrying over its distinctive character while reworking the cotton blend.

What makes this sweatshirt especially interesting is the combination of different cottons.

The face yarn is a 16-count yarn blended from 70% Desi cotton and 30% Ugandan organic cotton.

The naturally dry character of Desi cotton is combined with Ugandan organic cotton, chosen for how well the two work together. The result is a lofty, slightly coarse texture that almost feels like wool, despite being cotton.

The backing yarn is even more unusual, using naturally brown Zimbabwean cotton.

Rather than the soft and fluffy feel you might expect from a typical sweatshirt, this fabric has a distinctly dry, textured character that feels very UES.

The construction is equally classic.

The neckline features V-shaped gussets at both the front and back, a detail often referred to as a double-V construction.

The sweatshirt fabric is also cut cross-grain, with the direction of the knit turned sideways, while long expansion gussets in ribbed fabric run along the sides. This construction helps reduce vertical shrinkage while allowing the body to stretch more easily from side to side.

Long ribbed cuffs finish the sleeves, with a small UES woven label placed near the cuff.

There’s nothing particularly flashy about it, but look closely and you’ll find plenty of details rooted in old athletic sweatshirts.

It’s a sweatshirt, but there’s something almost sweater-like about it.

The clean silhouette is easy to wear, while the construction allows it to move comfortably with the body. It works naturally with denim or military trousers, but we think it would look just as good with a slightly dressier pair of trousers.

This season, Spiral has it in OATMEAL and BLACK.

Details designed to reduce shrinkage while allowing freedom of movement.

Look at vintage sweatshirts and you’ll sometimes find a vertical panel of ribbed fabric running along each side of the body.

This construction is generally known as an expansion gusset.

By inserting highly elastic ribbing at the sides, the garment can stretch more easily across the body, improving freedom of movement.

At the same time, the main body fabric is used cross-grain, with the direction of the knit turned sideways to help reduce vertical shrinkage after washing.

Because turning the fabric sideways changes the way the body stretches horizontally, the ribbed expansion gussets at the sides help compensate by providing additional flexibility.

The neckline also features V-shaped gussets at both the front and back, creating the classic double-V construction.

Along with its unusual cotton blend, these functional details derived from early athletic wear are another part of what makes this sweatshirt so interesting.
