This season's challenge item = an item that I'm worried might not sell. I think it turned out well in the end, though.
In the past, we've made lined tailored jackets such as the Maple Leaf Jacket, King Porter Jacket, and Glenn Jacket.
In the dead of winter, it's often too cold to wear anything else, so I often wear it with the collar turned up. This time, I tried opening the turned-up collar like a shirt... It's not a tailored jacket, nor is it a coverall. It's a jacket that's hard to define, but somehow charming. That's what inspired the WORKERS Jacket.
Since I couldn't categorize it, I named it "WORKERS Jacket." It's like a coverall when the front buttons are fastened all the way up, and a tailored jacket "look" when opened.
The body lining is cotton twill, and the sleeve lining is a polyester twill that is smooth, prevents static electricity, and hardly shrinks.
The check weighs 14.7 ounces.
I had these made as a WORKERS exclusive a few years ago, and I've been holding onto them because they didn't sell out, saving them for this occasion.
Two strands of 10-count yarn are twisted together to create an extremely thick yarn equivalent to 5-count. It is woven at the maximum density of the loom. Furthermore, the fabric is felted (shrunk) to increase its thickness, and finally, it is napped. We also made a version without napping for comparison, but we chose the moderately soft feel of the napped version. For more details about the fabric, please see below.
[Details about the fabric]
This is a checked wool melton fabric made with two strands of 10-count wool yarn twisted together to create a 5-count equivalent. It's woven at the highest density possible on the loom, then felted (washed and shrunk) and brushed. The fabric weighs 500g per square meter, or 14.7 ounces, making it extremely thick. However, the brushing process loosens the fibers just enough to prevent it from being stiff. We actually tried making it without brushing, but we wanted a little softness, so we went with the brushed version. The original inspiration was old vintage wool clothing. The fabric has that substantial thickness, but it's also slightly more supple and easier to wear.
Check patterns can be tricky to wear, but these are in muted black and gray tones, making them easy to match. More than anything, I want to wear them myself.
Red plaid → Something that makes me want to be like Kimutaku? Blue plaid that doesn't suit me → The item is cool, but it doesn't suit me.
I have a memory of struggling with that, so I thought, "If only I could find a gray check pattern..." but I couldn't find the fabric I was looking for.
Honestly, given the recent high cost of raw materials and the difficulty of the various conditions for making fabric in Japan, I made this fabric partly as a memento, thinking, "This might be the last time we can make it at a price people can afford."
The material is exactly as I expected, sturdy yet supple. The color tone is also calm and satisfying. It's the kind of fabric that I'd like to have burned with me when I die.
Do not wash. Dry cleaning recommended.
Outer Fabric: 14.7 oz 100% Wool Melton

Spiral always stocks items with special custom-made checkered fabric, and the magic words "challenge item number" are enough to make them buy it.
It wouldn't be interesting if Mr. Tateno stopped challenging himself, would it?
And those product numbers often indicate good quality, but they also often mean there's no next version.
Because it's a WORKERS Jacket, please feel free to use it in your daily life. It also looks good over overalls.
Perhaps the recent trend of oversized clothing has subsided, as this item has a slightly slimmer fit.
