We've reached the gateway to Hades, the engineer's jacket. As a maker, I'm always tempted to try my hand at it. But it's known for being difficult to design, which means it doesn't sell!

At first, looking at vintage clothes, I was racking my brain thinking, "There's no way to do this!" Then one day, when I put on a coverall with a length of about 65 cm, I wore it with the front folded. I saw that in the mirror and it clicked. This is it!!!!! Until then, I had been too constrained by the "grammar of the engineer's jacket"—the unusually short length of vintage pieces, and the two or three pockets.

What's important about an engineer's jacket, I realized, is the V-shape of the front and the collarless design. As long as you stick to that, you can arrange the rest and it will still look like a "cool engineer's jacket."

The material is 8/6/5 oz, noticeably thinner than the 10 oz fabrics I usually use for workwear. I considered wearing it starting in August when it would be delivered. "If I'm going to make it, I might as well!" is WORKERS' bad habit, so I redesigned the name tag. I happened to see a green woven label on a vintage item, and a flasher that indicated it could be worn by people from small to large.

I mixed those together and designed a new label. If I'm going to make it, I want to go all the way! That's the feeling.

In autumn, I recommend pairing it with a chambray or button-down shirt, letting the collar peek out.

For this item, Spiral chose two types: 8oz Pure Indigo Denim and 6oz Indigo Hickory.

Both are lighter than the typical 10oz fabrics used for work jackets, with the material selection anticipating wear from seasons when the heat still lingers.

The denim has the classic look of workwear.

The hickory has a strong stripe, but the collarless design makes it surprisingly neat.

On the chest is a newly created green woven label.

Creating new graphics that evoke the advertisements seen on vintage workwear is also very characteristic of WORKERS.

Lightly layer it over a T-shirt, and then layer it with a shirt or sweatshirt when it gets cooler.

It's a little lighter than a coverall, but more robust workwear than a shirt jacket.
