TROUSERS AKA "M43", Brown Herringbone

Miracle? The M-43 is back. We made it a while ago, and our dealer, Uncle John, was a big fan and wanted it to be re-released.

When I asked the factory for 24 Spring/Summer if I wanted to make military pants for the first time in a while, they replied, "We definitely don't make 6-pocket pants." That's when I remembered the M-43. The 2-pocket pants have no front or back slack pockets, so they're cool even in the hot and humid season.

I asked the factory, "How about 2 pieces instead of 6?" and they said OK! (However, I don't know what kind of thinking it is to say, "Pants are pants! The labor cost is the same as for 4 pockets!" This time, I accepted the conditions, so I am negotiating to have them make 6 pockets.)

Since I was going to make them anyway, I traced the original pattern and... it was frighteningly similar to the baker pants I had taken apart a few years ago. Military wear tends to have a very similar silhouette if the purpose is similar. In terms of fashion, they probably wouldn't make unnecessary changes like "narrow hems are in this year" or "I feel like the top should be a little shallower again."

Material: Herringbone, approx. 9.8 oz., color stable reactive dye.

The loose silhouette makes it suitable for summer wear. The modified way to wear them is to fold the hem vertically, squeeze it, and then fold the hem round and round. The hem will have a thin balloon-like silhouette. I recommend folding it this way for 10 oz. pants when riding a motorcycle in summer. It's scary to ride a motorcycle in 5 oz. pants, even in summer.

"How about two pockets?" Tateno's negotiating skills are as you'd expect.

The original had an unusually large triangular button press part, which was unnecessary so was removed.
13star tack buttons are produced in their thousands to order in custom colors with paint that peels off just the right amount.
It is a stitching technique not found in vintage items that reduces thickness around the buttonholes.
A guard that stops the wings from fluttering.
The pockets on both sides are folded to create a three-dimensional look.
Such as belt loops with removed seams.

The original was well thought out and made, and now Tateno has added his own unique details.
Of course that's a good idea.

And it's cheap!
