This is the first and last M-65 field jacket I made almost exactly like the original.
We dismantled a piece known as the "second model," which has an original gray lining.
I traced the pattern and tried to make the sewing method as close to the original as possible.
The changes from the original are that the buttons that were attached to the liner are removed. I also removed the shoulder epaulets because I don't like them personally.
The most difficult part of the original disassembly was the cuffs. Please see the detailed pattern notes. The cuffs feature triangular gussets. The gussets are made of a separate piece of fabric. This is the extra space, and when folded up with Velcro, the cuffs Fits snugly.
It could have been made a little easier, but it's very elaborate. The reason the gusset is made from a different fabric is probably to make it fit neatly when folded.
The outer fabric is thick, so it won't fit as is. The sewing method is what is known as the "military-style messy sewing." First, the outer and inner sleeves are made, and then the sleeves are sewn together from the back.
The back is made a little larger, and when the dimensions don't fit, I just fold it and pinch the tack. This is OK as a tool. But the factory I use doesn't do that. I've always lived by the principle of "neat sewing is everything," so even with these crazy specifications, I mark them carefully and fold them neatly to finish.
I don't know how much longer I'll be able to make this type of design, so this is my final memory.
The material and outer surface are based on the original and are a cotton-nylon blend back satin.
