“Esmond” Garden 70 x 70

Trade blankets are by default very beautiful. I am a particular fan of Esmond Mills from Rhode Island. Bandannas were also produced in Rhode Island for a long time as well. Trade blankets are a major cultural symbol of American history and the West. These beautiful designs originate from traditional Native American basket weaving, beadwork and weaving techniques. They have a strong affiliation with a variety of cultural topics but for this one Yurika and I designed this one around a Esmond blanket. Fiddling with the colors a bit to get them to how we think they would really shine, we have matcha green, indigo blues and rusty reds. A nice combination of Japanese colors and American history.

Trade blankets are inherently beautiful. Among them, I particularly like the patterns from Esmond Mills in Rhode Island. Bandanas have also been produced in Rhode Island for a long time. I believe trade blankets are an indispensable cultural symbol when discussing American history and Western culture. Their beautiful patterns are based on traditional Native American basket weaving, beadwork, and weaving techniques. While they have deep connections to various cultural backgrounds, Yurika and I designed this one based on an Esmond blanket. We adjusted the colors a bit to make them truly pop, resulting in a matcha-like green, indigo blue, and a rusty red. I think it turned out to be a nice blend of Japanese colors and American history.

Spiral Comment

Although it features a Native pattern, it somehow gives off an elegant and calm impression, which is due to the incorporation of Japanese sensibilities in the color scheme.

Matcha-like green, deep indigo blue, and a rusty red. All of these colors pair extremely well with denim and indigo, making them surprisingly harmonious despite their boldness.

At 70x70cm, this large size offers versatile styling options, not just around the neck, but also tied to a bag or tucked into a jacket pocket.

The Native pattern vibe is sure to pair perfectly with SpiralDance scarf rings. Please try them together.

This piece, reinterpreted with Japanese color sensibilities based on traditional American design, is truly characteristic of One Ear Brand.

What is a Trade Blanket?

From the 19th to the early 20th century, blankets were widely traded goods in North America.

These were not just everyday items; they were important tools for Native American people, used for clothing, bedding, and ceremonies.

Their geometric patterns incorporated designs from traditional crafts such as basket weaving, textiles, and beadwork, and are still highly valued today as representative designs of American vintage, rugs, and Western culture.

One Ear Brand reinterprets these historic designs, incorporating them into familiar items like bandanas to offer new ways to enjoy them.
