“Hikuri Poppy” 90 x 90

This bandana is something I’ve wanted to create from the very beginning. We’ve always loved cacti in this region—ever since childhood, and also from more recent trips to the deserts of the Southwest, we’ve been captivated by their shapes and grandeur. The form of the saguaro is just as defining to the landscape as the mesas. Along with that fascination, we’ve also been interested in the peyote (Lophophora) cactus. Having some familiarity with Huichol culture, I felt it deserved a name that reflects that connection.

I wanted to create a design that feels like a roadside souvenir from the Southwest, mixed with the spirit of a road trip. Something like a bandana that could appear in a novel by Hunter S. Thompson, combined with the colors of Carl Riddin’s paintings—something a character from a David Lynch film might wear.

このバンダナは、最初からずっと作りたかった作品です。私たちはこの地域でサボテンが大好きで、幼少期や最近訪れた南西部の砂漠で、サボテンの形と壮麗さに魅了されました。サワロの形は、メサと同じくらい風景を特徴づけています。この形への愛着に加え、ペヨーテ（ラフォフォラ）サボテンにも興味があります。ヒクリ文化に多少なりとも精通していたので、この作品にふさわしい名前をつけました…

「ヒクリ（Hikuri）」は、ウィチョル族の言葉でペヨーテ（サボテンの一種）を意味します。

ヒクリ＝ペヨーテは、単なる植物ではなく、ウィチョル族にとっては神聖な存在・精霊。

ウィチョル族の文化に着想を得つつも、お土産物感も追加されてそこはかとなくチープ。幻想的でサイケデリックな色彩が印象的なデザインですね。
