Baker shorts are back after a long time. The waist area is exactly the same as the full-length version.
I rarely wear shorts anymore, but I see them often in the summer. So, I thought, why not make shorts with the same specifications as the full-length trousers? And so, I did.

Below, I'll also provide an explanation for the full-length version.

The official name is "TROUSERS, MEN’S, COTTON, SATEEN," commonly known as "Baker Pants."

The pattern was created by deconstructing and tracing the original MIL-T-838D (1958). The hem width is 24 cm. It has a loose silhouette with wide thighs and a deep rise.

The design allows for airflow in the summer and comfortable layering with leggings in the winter.

The fabric, back satin, was created based on the MIL-T-838D individual item and MIL-C-10296J (fabric specifications), resulting in a "coarse-textured back satin used for Baker pants." It has a supple feel.

Initially, it was sulfur-dyed, but it is now vat-dyed. The initial sulfur dye was discontinued. We changed the type of sulfur dye, but then factories capable of integrated "mercerized" (process to flatten the surface with alkali) and sulfur dyeing disappeared.

Having "mercerized" and "dyeing" done at separate factories is not realistic in terms of cost and quality stability.

Therefore, we switched to "vat dyeing." With vat dyeing, there are integrated factories for mercerization and dyeing. A characteristic of vat dyeing is less color fading compared to sulfur dyeing. However, "whitening" occurs in areas that rub. As you can see from the back flat-felled seam, there is a striking and noticeable change.

While sulfur dyeing makes the entire garment whitish, eventually reaching a similar overall color, vat dyeing shows a stark difference between rubbed and unrubbed areas.

Whereas back satin is about 10 oz, poplin is about 6.2 oz. After wearing jungle fatigue pants for weeding in the summer, I thought, "Wouldn't Baker pants made with poplin of this thickness be perfect for midsummer?" And so, I brought this idea to life. However, the fabric thickness differs from back satin, making it difficult to sew using the same methods. We made minor adjustments, such as changing the waistband from chain stitching to single stitching.

Despite the declaration "We won't make shorts anymore because labor costs are too high!" it doesn't seem like much time has passed, and Baker shorts are back.

Furthermore, given the increasingly hot summers we've been experiencing, it's likely been deemed that cool shorts are an essential item.

This season, two types are being released: one using 10oz back satin and another using an even lighter 6.2oz poplin. This page is for the 6.2oz cotton poplin fabric version.

The high-density woven cotton poplin is lightweight yet has a firm crispness due to its tight weave, combining lightness with durability.
As it is washed, it becomes softer, and changes over time, such as puckering and abrasions, are also one of its charms.

The length is around knee-length, so if it's too long, you might want to roll it up a bit.
