Baker shorts for the first time in a long while. The waist is exactly the same as the long version.
I rarely wear shorts anymore, but I see them a lot in the summer. So, I thought, why not make shorts with the same specifications as the long pants? And so, I did.
Below, I've also included an explanation of the long pants version.
Official name: "TROUSERS, MEN’S, COTTON, SATEEN," commonly known as "Baker Pants."
The pattern was traced from an original MIL-T-838D (1958) that was deconstructed. The hem width is 24 cm. It has a loose silhouette with wide thighs and a deep rise.
It's airy in summer, and you can wear leggings underneath in winter without feeling constricted.
The fabric, back satin, was created based on MIL-T-838D samples and MIL-C-10296J (fabric specifications) to be a "coarse-weave back satin used for Baker Pants." It has a supple feel.
Initially sulfur-dyed, it is now vat-dyed. The initial sulfur dye was discontinued. We changed the type of sulfur dye, but then factories that could perform both "mercerization" (a process to flatten the surface with alkali) and sulfur dyeing in a single continuous process became unavailable.
Performing "mercerization" and "dyeing" at separate factories is not practical for cost and quality stability.
Therefore, we switched to "vat dyeing." With vat dyeing, there are factories that can perform mercerization and dyeing in a continuous process. A characteristic of vat dyeing is that there is less color fading compared to sulfur dyeing. However, it does "whiten" in areas that are rubbed. As you can see from the back flat-felled seam, the change is distinct and striking.
Sulfur dyeing makes the whole fabric appear whitish, and eventually, the entire fabric becomes almost the same color, but vat dyeing shows a stark difference between rubbed and unrubbed areas.
While back satin is about 10 oz, poplin is about 6.2 oz. I wore jungle fatigues in the summer while weeding and thought, "If I make Baker Pants out of poplin this thick, it would be perfect for mid-summer?" and so I made it. However, the fabric thickness is different from back satin, so it's difficult to sew them using the same method. We've made minor adjustments, such as changing the waistband from chain stitching to single stitching.
The product is already one-washed.

From the declaration, "Labor costs are too high, we won't make shorts anymore!"... I don't think much time has passed, but the Baker Pants shorts are back.
Given how excessively hot recent summers have become, it's likely they judged cool shorts to be an essential item.
This season, two types are being released: one made from 10oz back satin and another from even lighter 6.2oz poplin. This page is for the 6.2oz cotton poplin fabric version.
Though lightweight, the high-density woven cotton poplin has a firm crispness from its tight weave, combining lightness and durability.
As it's washed, it becomes softer, and changes over time such as puckering and fades are also an attractive feature.
They will be about knee-length, so if they are too long, you might want to fold them up a bit.
The product is pre-washed.Actual Size Chart: Unit cm
