Baker shorts for the first time in a while. The waist is exactly the same as the long version.
I rarely wear shorts anymore, but I see them often in the summer. I thought it would be great if there were shorts with the same specifications as long pants, so I made them.
Below, I will also provide an explanation for the long pants version.
Officially known as "TROUSERS, MEN'S, COTTON, SATEEN," commonly called "Baker Pants."
The pattern was deconstructed and traced from the original MIL-T-838D (1958). The hem width is 24 cm. It has a loose silhouette with wide thighs and a deep rise.
In summer, the wind flows through, and in winter, you can wear leggings inside without feeling constricted.
The fabric, back satin, is "coarse-grained back satin used for Baker pants," made with reference to the MIL-T-838D individual and MIL-C-10296J (fabric specs). It has a supple feel.
Initially sulfur-dyed, it is now vat-dyed. The initial sulfur dyes were discontinued. Although the type of sulfur dye was changed, there was no longer a factory that could consistently perform "mercerization" (a process to flatten the surface with alkali) and sulfur dyeing.
Performing "mercerization" and "dyeing" at separate factories was not realistic in terms of cost and quality stability.
Therefore, we switched to "vat dyeing." With vat dyeing, there are integrated factories for mercerization and dyeing. A characteristic of vat dyeing is less color fading compared to sulfur dyeing. However, "whitening" occurs in areas that rub. As seen in the back flat-felled seam, the change is distinct and striking.
With sulfur dyeing, the entire garment turns whitish, and eventually, the entire garment becomes almost the same color, but with vat dyeing, there is a stark difference between rubbed and unrubbed areas.
While back satin is about 10 oz, poplin is about 6.2 oz. After wearing jungle fatigues and mowing the lawn in summer, I thought, "If I made Baker pants from poplin of this thickness, they would be perfect for midsummer," and so I made them. However, the fabric thickness differs from back satin, and the same sewing method doesn't work well. We made minor adjustments, such as changing the waistband from chain stitching to single stitching.

Because the labor costs were too high, I declared that I would no longer make shorts! It doesn't seem like much time has passed since then, but the Baker shorts are back.
What's more, with the increasingly hot summers of recent years, cool shorts must have been deemed an essential item.
This season, two models have been released: one using 10oz back satin and another using an even lighter 6.2oz poplin. This page is for the 6.2oz cotton poplin fabric version.
High-density woven cotton poplin is lightweight yet has a firm crispness due to its tight weave, combining lightness and durability.
As it is washed, it becomes softer, and changes over time, such as puckering and abrasions, are also one of its charms.
They are knee-length, so if they are too long, you can fold them up a bit.
