A structure found in ancient footwear, designed to bind, wrap, and propel the foot forward.
AYAH is a leather sandal that reconstructs the concepts of Japanese waraji, ancient Roman caligae, and military-derived gladiator sandals.
Despite differences in culture and era, the rationality of keeping the foot close to the ground and lightening the body is common. AYAH has brought this universal structure into modern life.
The generously sized footbed and deliberately asymmetrical outline create a unique presence where ruggedness and elegance coexist. The design, with its ample space, naturally conforms to various foot widths, leading to a comfortable wearing experience that reduces stress during long walks.
Cushioning is built into various points where the foot makes contact. The thong part features a structure where the inside of the bag stitching is turned outwards, so the seam does not directly rub against the foot. This enhances comfort while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic.
The WHT/BRN model uses TOSCANO leather from Tuscany, Italy. Furthermore, the white parts are combined with undyed, white-tanned Italian horse leather. A distinctive feature is the ability to enjoy the natural texture of the materials and their aging process through sun exposure and oxidation.
A sponge is built into the footbed, providing a comfort unique to "growing leather" that molds to the wearer's foot shape over time. The ankle strap is removable, allowing for changes in appearance to match styling or mood.
Vibram soles are used, and the sandals are designed to be re-soled, allowing for long-term wear and care.
AYAH is a pair of sandals that combines the structural beauty of ancient footwear with modern functionality.
